The expansion of Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain pipeline has been approved by British Columbia. The pipeline will run from the Alberta oil sands to the coast to allow oil exports to Asia.

Alberta contains the world’s third largest oil reserves and needs expanded infrastructure in place to export its growing oil sands production. The planned expansion would triple the capacity of the pipeline and is expected to increase tanker traffic sevenfold. Kinder Morgan Canada has announced plans to begin construction in September, but protests and court challenges are expected.
