A powerful blast that ripped through the Jinlingshihua Nanjing Refinery is now under control according to the local fire department. The local media have reported no casualties so far and said the blast may have been caused by production equipment catching fire on Sunday afternoon. The explosion occurred at 13:51 local time, and created huge plumes of smoke that were visible for miles. Nanjing’s environmental ministry has stated that no hazardous gases have been expelled into the atmosphere.

The Chinese government has promised to improve safety at large industrial plants after the chemical blasts in the port city of Tianjin on 12 August 2015 killed 173 people.
