Improving simulation and removing false alarms

Gassco operates a large number of natural gas pipelines that cross the North Sea, moving gas from the Norwegian
continental shelf to Europe and the UK. We use the Atmos SIM real-time models to simulate these pipelines, and these simulations drive model-based leak detection. These are challenging simulation applications because the pipelines have little or no instrumentation on the sea floor, so there are stretches of hundreds of miles between measurements.

This paper is a case study of our efforts to improve the behavior of the simulator and remove the false alarms.
