Pipelines are safe; it's time to move forward

Pipelines are among the safest, most efficient methods for transporting energy. After an exhaustive review process, it’s time for Minnesota to move forward.

Pipeline ruptures cause serious damage

The 2012 DOT pipeline leak detection study states that if detection and shutdown is not acted on as soon as a rupture occurs, the consequences can escalate so having a robust and reliable system in place is important.

Pipeline product theft, the more we look, the more theft points we are finding

As we look for product theft, we are surprised by how many theft points we discover. In particular, Atmos is working closely with companies south of the US border to effectively detect and locate those illegal tapping points with an accuracy of a couple of hundred meters.

Pipeline Product Release Trends

According to the API advisory, PPTS Advisory 2009-5, facility releases account for more than half of the incidents in the hazardous liquids industry’s Pipeline Performance Tracking System (PPTS). The facility leaks were lower in consequence as, typically, the leaks were lower in volume and they were contained in the facility.

Pipeline operators to be held accountable for pipeline accidents

In April 2016 Congresswoman Janice Hahn and Congresswoman Jackie Speier introduced legislation to hold pipeline operators accountable for destructive and deadly pipeline accidents in the US. The proposed Prosecuting Irresponsible Pipeline Explosions (PIPE) Act makes pipeline operators responsible for clear misconduct.
